Exodus
11/2008
I took the trolley to the end of the line
a shopping center
and walked north from there
away from the mundane
away from screaming children
mothers doing early Christmas shopping
Starbucks and Wal-Mart and
the

incessant

need

to spend money

until I reached a pathway lined
with fallen yellow leaves
finally a sign that autumn exists
in this arid place
I grabbed two handfuls
and
closing my eyes
threw them into the air
laughing
as they fell about me.

the pathway ended abruptly in a low brick wall
which I scaled and cleared with speed
carefully removed from the mundane
I examine the world beyond
